Do unused ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini messages roll over?
No. On ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, the usage included in your plan is a fixed allowance per window that resets on a schedule, and whatever you did not use before the reset is gone. The balances that do carry forward are the ones you pay for separately: ChatGPT credits for 12 months, Claude usage credits indefinitely in most countries, OpenAI gift card funds without expiry, and API credits at both labs for one year.
The reset rules below are taken from each vendor’s help center as of October 2, 2026.
ChatGPT
OpenAI’s plans measure usage in windows. Its Pro tiers article says that at a model’s limit “it may be unavailable until its allowance resets,” that ChatGPT displays the reset time when it can, and that “you cannot bypass a limit or increase it through a setting.” Codex and ChatGPT Work share one allowance measured, per the Astra usage article, over a five-hour window and, on most plans, a weekly window: “A new window starts when you send your first message in Work or Codex after the previous window ends.” Pro 100, 200 and 500 currently have no five-hour limit in Work and Codex but still have an included allowance.
Nothing in those windows accumulates. A purchased instant reset, per OpenAI’s paid resets article, “pulls your normal weekly allowance forward rather than adding a separate usage entitlement,” and the Astra article says a reset “does not permanently increase your plan’s limits.” Free users get one carry of sorts: the Free tier FAQ says a rate limit resets immediately when you upgrade to Plus, Pro or Business.
What does carry over at OpenAI:
- ChatGPT credits, bought in Settings, then Usage for Codex, Work and the Office add-ins. The credits article says “credits are valid for 12 months from purchase. Unused credits expire and do not roll over after the expiry date.” They are non-refundable except where the law requires.
- Gift card funds. Redeemed cards sit in a US dollar wallet, and the gift card article says “your gift card does not expire” and that unused funds remain for future eligible purchases.
- Banked Codex resets, the promotional resets handed out around the GPT-6 Astra launch, carry until the expiry date shown in your account; the banked resets article says an expired reset “cannot be restored or reissued.”
- API credits expire one year after purchase, per OpenAI’s prepaid billing article, and its Service Credit Terms apply the same year to any prepaid or promotional credit unless a different period was stated at purchase.
Claude
Anthropic’s Pro plan article says “your session-based usage limit will reset every five hours,” and that Pro plans “also have a weekly usage limit that applies across all models,” resetting on a fixed schedule unique to each account. The Max plan article says the same for Max 5x and Max 20x, and that Settings, then Usage shows the next reset. Each reset returns the allowance to full; nothing on either page lets an unused session carry into the next one.
Two things do carry at Anthropic:
- Usage credits, which Pro and Max subscribers buy to keep working at API rates past the plan limit. The usage credits article says “usage credits do not expire” in most cases, with one exception: in certain jurisdictions such as Japan, credits bought from September 10, 2026 expire six months after purchase, with an email seven days before.
- Limit resets, which Anthropic’s limit reset article says are given occasionally to eligible plans and used when you choose; if one has an expiry, the date is shown in Settings, then Usage.
Promotional credit is different. Anthropic’s promotion credit terms say such credit “expires on the date stated in the offer, or 90 days after issuance if no date is stated,” and is forfeited if you cancel, downgrade to a free plan or lose the account. API credits bought in the Claude Console expire one year from purchase, per Anthropic’s API billing article, and the date cannot be extended.
Gemini
Google’s Gemini Apps limits article says the Gemini app uses “compute-based usage limits” that “refresh every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit.” Usage depends on the complexity of the prompt, the features used and the length of the chat; AI Plus gets 2x the standard limit, AI Pro 4x, and AI Ultra 5x or 20x AI Pro. Google’s changes article dates the move to this system to May 17, 2026 for adults and July 24, 2026 for users under 18. Google does not publish when the weekly limit resets, and neither page offers any carry-over. At a limit, the options Google lists are to continue in Flash-Lite, upgrade, or wait for the refresh.
Google’s AI credits, the separate balance that pays for Google Flow and Antigravity, state the rule outright. The Flow credits article says unused daily credits “don’t roll over” and “unused monthly Google Flow credits do not roll over to the next month”; AI Pro includes 1,000 a month on top of 50 a day. Credits you buy on top are the exception: Google’s AI credits article says purchased AI credits “may expire after a certain period, as set out when you acquire them.”
What this means for a plan choice
Included usage is use-it-or-lose-it at all three vendors, on a five-hour clock and a weekly one. Money added on top lasts longer: a year at OpenAI, indefinitely at Anthropic outside Japan, and on terms set at purchase at Google. If you regularly end a week with allowance unspent, a cheaper plan plus credits for the busy weeks can cost less than the next tier up. Brass’s prepaid packs ($10 to $250, spendable across Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek at list price plus 25 percent) are built for that pattern and never expire.
