Will Claude usage limits increase in 2026?
Not across the board. The one scheduled change Anthropic has published is for Claude Code: from September 14, 2026, its weekly limit sits 25 percent above the level before the May promotion, which works out to about 17 percent below the temporary limit that ran through September 13. Everything else in Anthropic’s help center describes the same structure it has had all year, a session allowance that resets every five hours and a weekly cap that resets at a fixed time, with usage credits at API rates for anything beyond them.
The details below come from Anthropic’s support articles, pricing page and Claude Code documentation as of October 2, 2026.
What the Pro and Max limits are
Anthropic’s current articles give no message counts. Its usage limits article says usage depends on “the length and complexity of your conversations, the features you use, which Claude model you’re chatting with, and the effort level you’ve selected,” and that claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all draw on the same limit. What Anthropic publishes instead is a ratio between plans.
| Plan | Price | Session allowance, per Anthropic |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Baseline |
| Pro | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually | At least 5x Free per five-hour session |
| Max 5x | $100 a month | 5x Pro per session |
| Max 20x | $200 a month | 20x Pro per session |
Prices and ratios are from the Claude pricing page and the Max plan article, which adds that Max is sold monthly only. Team seats have their own allowances, and the Claude Code cost documentation says those also reset on a five-hour window and a weekly window.
Five-hour sessions and weekly caps
Two clocks run at once. The Pro plan article says “your session-based usage limit will reset every five hours,” and that Pro plans “also have a weekly usage limit that applies across all models.” The weekly limit resets at a fixed day and time assigned to your account. Settings, then Usage shows the next reset, with progress bars for the current session and the week, per Anthropic’s usage limit best practices. That page also lists a separate weekly reset for Fable on plans that include it, and the Claude Code documentation describes model-specific limit messages, so one model family can run out while the others still have allowance.
Claude Code counts against the same numbers. Anthropic’s article on Claude Code with Pro and Max says all activity in both tools counts against the same usage limits, so a heavy coding afternoon shortens the chat allowance, and the reverse.
The September 14, 2026 change
Anthropic ran a promotion from May 13 through September 13, 2026 that made weekly limits in Claude Code 50 percent higher for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans. Its promotion article says that starting September 14, 2026, “weekly limits in Claude Code are 25 percent higher than they were before the promotion” for the same plans. The five-hour limit did not change, and the increase applies to Claude Code only, in the CLI, IDE extensions, desktop app and web.
The arithmetic is why it felt like a cut. If the pre-May weekly limit was 100 units, the summer limit was 150 and the limit from September 14 is 125, one sixth lower than the week before. Anthropic’s help center lists no further scheduled increase as of October 2, 2026.
What extra usage costs
Beyond the included allowance, Pro and Max subscribers can turn on usage credits in Settings, then Usage. Anthropic’s usage credits article says they are “billed at standard API rates,” with a monthly spend limit you set and a $2,000 daily redemption limit. At the API prices in force on October 1, 2026, that is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens for Claude Sonnet 5.5, $4 and $20 for Claude Opus 5.5, and $10 and $50 for Claude Fable 5.1. The Claude Code documentation adds a quieter cost: the prompt cache lifetime drops from an hour on plan usage to five minutes once you are drawing on usage credits, so the first message after a break reprocesses your whole context at the full input price unless you set the cache TTL yourself.
Usage bundles prepay those credits at a discount: $50 of usage for $45, $250 for $200 and $1,000 for $700, up to $2,000 of bundle value a month on Pro and Max. The credits do not expire in most countries; the exception Anthropic names is Japan, where credits bought from September 10, 2026 expire after six months.
What to do when you hit a limit
- Check which limit it was. Settings, then Usage on claude.ai, or
/usagein Claude Code, shows the session bar, the weekly bar and the reset time. A session limit clears within five hours; a weekly limit waits for your fixed reset. - Look for a limit reset. Anthropic’s limit reset article says these are “given occasionally to eligible plans” and are free to use. One reset puts either the five-hour or the weekly limit back to full, and your weekly limit still resets on its usual day.
- Spend less per message. The best practices article recommends combining related questions into one message, referring back to earlier context instead of repeating it, and keeping reference documents in a project so they are cached. In Claude Code,
/clearbetween unrelated tasks,/compact, a lower/effortsetting and Sonnet instead of Opus for routine work all cut usage, and from version 2.1.234 Claude Code can wait at a limit and continue the task when the window resets. - Turn on usage credits or buy a bundle, at the prices above.
- Upgrade. The Pro article points Pro users to Max, and Anthropic’s Claude Code article points Max 5x users to Max 20x.
When the limit is on Claude alone and the task will not wait, a prepaid multi-model chat covers the gap: Brass sells $10 to $250 packs spendable across Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek at each model’s list price plus 25 percent, with no expiry and no API key.
