Are OpenAI API credits a good gift?
OpenAI API credit is useful when the recipient already has a billing account and builds against the API. It is a weak gift when they only use ChatGPT in the browser.
Check first
- Do they already have an OpenAI platform account?
- Will they understand usage invoices?
- Are you okay leaving credit inside OpenAI only?
ChatGPT gift cards do not pay for the API. If you want a simple gift that covers more than GPT, use prepaid multi-model credit instead.
Brass sells prepaid packs of $10 to $250 you can gift by email or as a card you print. Credits never expire. The recipient spends them across Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek. US only, 18 and over; an unclaimed gift returns to you after 90 days.
Still shopping for the holidays? A Brass pack goes by email or as a card you print at home, so it is there the day you give it. Send a pack.

No. OpenAI says gift card balance does not fund API prepaid billing. Use API billing or a different prepaid product for developers.
