Gift ideas for programmers in 2026
The gifts programmers keep are the ones they would have bought themselves: a book they have been meaning to read, a tool that sits on the desk every day, or a year of something they already pay for by the month. The list below has 16 of those, with prices checked on the makers’ or publishers’ own pages in the first week of October 2026, from a $35 book to a $599 keyboard.
Anything with memory chips in it has changed price this year, so the hardware section says when each price last moved and where to check it before you order.
Books
- The Pragmatic Programmer, 20th Anniversary Edition, by David Thomas and Andrew Hunt. $43.99 in hardcover from InformIT, or $39.99 for the DRM-free ebook (PDF, ePub and Mobi together) from the authors’ own Pragmatic Bookshelf. It is 320 pages, revised in 2019, and still the book working programmers hand to a new colleague.
- The Rust Programming Language, 3rd Edition, by Steve Klabnik, Carol Nichols and Chris Krycho. $59.99 for print plus ebook, or $47.99 for the ebook alone, from No Starch Press. Published March 2026, 624 pages, updated for the Rust 2024 edition with a full chapter on async programming. For anyone who has said they should learn Rust this year.
- The Art of Computer Programming, Volumes 1 to 4B boxed set, by Donald Knuth. $259.99 from InformIT. Five volumes, including Volume 4B on combinatorial algorithms and satisfiability. Few people read it cover to cover. It is the shelf gift for the programmer who already owns everything else on this list.
- The Art of Doing Science and Engineering, by Richard Hamming. $35 from Stripe Press, which describes it as a manual for developing insights through scientific thinking. It suits a senior engineer who stopped reading programming books years ago.
- Crafting Interpreters, by Robert Nystrom. The whole 640-page book is free to read on the web, and print and ebook editions are sold through Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other stores. The reader builds two complete interpreters for a scripting language, from parsing through garbage collection. Buy the print edition; the free web version means the recipient can check whether they want it before you do.
Desk hardware
- Keychron Q1 Max. $209.99 to $229.99 depending on the version, from Keychron. A 75 percent layout in a full metal case, hot-swappable switches, 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth wireless, and QMK and VIA support for remapping any key. The safe mechanical keyboard gift for someone who types all day on the keyboard that came with the computer.
- Kinesis Advantage360 Signature Series. $599 from Kinesis. A fully split keyboard with bowl-shaped key wells, three tenting heights, nine programmable layouts, a 60-day trial and a three-year warranty. Expensive, and the right gift for a programmer with wrist or shoulder pain who keeps putting off the switch.
- Logitech MX Master 4. $119.99 from Logitech. An 8K DPI sensor that tracks on glass, a scroll wheel Logitech rates at 1,000 lines per second, haptic feedback and pairing across several computers.
- Elgato Stream Deck MK.2. $149.99 from Elgato. Fifteen LCD keys, each of which can launch an app, run a shortcut or trigger a script, which turns it into a build button, a meeting mute button or a window-layout switch.
- Raspberry Pi 5. From $45 for the 1 GB board, a price Raspberry Pi left unchanged in its February 2026 pricing post; the 2 GB board rose to $77.50 on October 1, 2026. Raspberry Pi has raised prices several times since December 2025 because LPDDR4 memory costs rose, so check the product page before buying. The board has a 2.4 GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A76, two USB 3.0 ports and Gigabit Ethernet.
Courses and subscriptions
- master.dev, the site formerly called Frontend Masters. $39 a month or $390 a year from master.dev. Over 300 courses plus live workshops through the year, with offline playback in the iOS and Android apps.
- O’Reilly learning platform. $49 a month or $499 a year for an individual subscription. Books, courses, videos, audiobooks, early-release titles, live events and interactive labs. Many employers already provide it, so ask before you buy.
- GitHub Copilot Pro. $10 a month from GitHub. It includes $15 of AI credits each month for chat, agents and code review, with unlimited code completions. Pro+ is $39 a month with $70 of credits.
AI usage
- A Claude gift subscription, once Anthropic sells them again. Its support article says gift subscriptions are currently unavailable to purchase for all accounts (checked October 6, 2026). When they return, they cover Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, delivered by email or as a link. Pro costs $20 a month and includes Claude Code, most Pro and Max subscribers can buy one, and the recipient has 365 days from the purchase date to redeem it.
- An OpenAI gift card. Digital cards in amounts from $15 to $250 are sold through US retailers such as Best Buy, per OpenAI’s help page. The recipient redeems the PIN at chatgpt.com/redeem, and the balance pays for ChatGPT subscriptions and credit purchases on the web. US accounts only, and the cards do not expire.
- A prepaid multi-model AI pack. Brass sells packs of $10, $25, $50, $100 or $250 that never expire, across Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek, and can be sent as a link (US only, 18 and over).
If the person already pays for one AI subscription and you want to add to it rather than duplicate it, the rules in Can you gift Claude to someone? and Where to buy a ChatGPT gift card and what it covers spell out what each option will and will not pay for.
Still shopping for the holidays? A Brass pack goes by email or as a card you print at home, so it is there the day you give it. Send a pack.
